Talent shortages are affecting every sector, in every part of the UK
Careers in the engineering sector aren’t immune to the ongoing battle for talent despite being one of our biggest sectors for growth potential.
The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) estimates that UK GDP fall by up to £39 billion every year from 2024 if labour shortages aren’t addressed.
Much of this challenge lies with businesses and recruiters to address by collaborating and putting people first – from getting the employer proposition right to investing in skills training.
What can employers do?
Our Manufacturing and Engineering Specialist Elizabeth Howe works in partnership with clients across Yorkshire to help them overcome the shortages they face and recommends the following strategies:
- Partnering with educational organisations – Working with colleges and universities that are offering engineering courses can be an effective way of attracting future talent. Consider attending career fairs, promoting an apprenticeship scheme and offering internships to build relationships with students and staff.
2. Being competitive – Offering a competitive renumeration package including salary, benefits, and perks will help you stand out and attract top talent in a competitive job market.
3. Considering work-life balance – Many engineering candidates now prioritise work-life balance and flexibility. Highlighting any policies or programs your company offers to support this, such remote working options, employee assistance programmes and flexible working schedules.
4. Promoting a strong employer brand – An employer brand can help differentiate your company and attract top talent. Emphasising your company’s mission, culture, and values, and highlighting any awards or recognition your company has received.
5. Invest in training and development – Training and development programmes can help build the skills of your current staff can also be an attractive benefit for potential hires. Consider offering opportunities forprofessional development, certifications and management programs.
6. Choosing the right recruitment partner – The right recruitment partner can impact the quality of talent hired, the speed of the recruitment process, and ultimately, the success of the business. A reputable recruitment partner will work consultatively with your business providing their expertise throughout the process. They will act as an ambassador for your organisation, helping to build a strong employer brand and establishing your reputation in the market.
